Microalloy precipitation in HSLA steel austenite

A series of steels containing 0.007 wt% Ti, 0.04 wt% Nb, and 0.011 wt% V with varying C and N contents was produced in a mould system that simulated continuous casting. The incidence, morphology and composition of eutectic precipitates of (TiNbV)(CN) that formed due to segregation during freezing, and the evolution of precipitates during subsequent reheating, were studied using electron microscopy with EDX and PEELS, and compared with the results of a computer simulation of the solution thermodynamics of(Ti(x)NbvV(1-x-y))(CyN1-y) in austenite.
