ASHRAE and the US Green Building Council have increased the emphasis on water efficiency in buildings in addition to energy efficiency. ASHRAE/USGBC/IES Standard 189.1, Standard for the Design of High Performance, Green Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, adds mandatory and optional provisions related to water use efficiency based on ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings,. Use of AC condensate for that purpose has been driven in part by USGBC's LEED program. Water-efficient irrigation systems and use of recycled water together can contribute 6-10 LEED points to a project. Approaches to use of recycled water for landscape irrigation purposes include capture and reuse of air-conditioner condensate.
