Non antibiotic-associated Colitis caused by Clostridium difficile in children: Two case reports

Infections with the grampositive bacterium Clostridium difficile occurs mostly in worst ill, multimorbide patients treated with cytostatica or antibiotics. We report about two healthy children with pseudomembranous colitis caused by Clostridium difficile without an underlying illness or a former history of antibiotic treatment. Result: In cases with a history of prolongated mucous diarrhoe one should consider an infection with Clostridium difficile. A pseudomembranous colitis with Clostridium difficile can be confirmed by the detection of the bacterium, the toxin as well as the typically histological picture.
