ISO observations of Mars: A determination of the water vapour vertical distribution

Infrared spectra of Mars, taken with SWS and LWS both in grating and FP modes, are used to retrieve information about the vertical distribution of water vapour and on the infrared emissivity of the surface. Assuming atmospheric and surface temperatures derived from the European Martian Climate Database, the ISO data are consistent with a H2O mixing ratio of 4 (+4, -2) 10(-4) at the surface, a saturation level at 10 (+/- 2) km and a total column density of 15 (+11, -7) ppt-mu m. The mean surface emissivity is found to be close to 1.0 at 6 mu m and 0.83 at 40 mu m.
