Corrosion resistance and paintability of hot-dip galvannealed steel sheets for automotive body panels

Galvannealed coatings for automotive body panels were evaluated on various sheet containing steel in the containing view of coating weights. Data ws obtained on two ultra-low carbon sheet steels containing minor additions of Ti/Nb and Ti/P respectively. Phase distribution of Zn-Fe alloys within the galvannealed coatings were shown to be affected greatly by the coating weight as well as the galvannealing conditions. Cosmetic corrosion performance after painting was evaluated in a type of accelerated corrosion test. Thicker coatings had on increased Tendency to flake during subsequent processing, but offered better protection against cosmetic corrosion.
