Emission measurements of PM10 and PM2.5 at industrial plants

The Northrhine Westfalia State Environmental Agency and the University of Duisburg developped a three stage impactor which allows the direct measurement of the PM10 and PM2.5 fractions in dust-laden flue gases. The PM10, PM2,5 and total dust emissions of different industrial plants were determined. The results of individual measurements were averaged and the PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations were related to the total dust concentration. The results showed that the relation between PM10 or PM2.5 and total dust depends not only on the type of flue gas purification system, but much more on the type of the process. If particles are generated by mechanical processes (abrasion, grinding) the fine dust fraction of the total dust is smaller than with such processes, where the particles are generated predominantly from the gas phase by condensation.
