Clifford Collier Clogg, 1949-1995: A tribute to his life and work

Clifford Collier Clogg, distinguished social scientist and statistician, passed away this year at the age of 45. This paper reviews his scholarly contributions to the social sciences and statistics and extends some of his work on model comparisons. Section 2 discusses Clogg's work on the U.S. labor force and his attempts to produce social indicators of employment states move differentiated than the usual indicators-that is, the unemployment rate. Section 3 overviews some of Clogg's other work in demography, focusing on issues of standardization and population undercount. Section 4 discusses Clogg's contributions to statistical methodology for categorical data. Attention centers on his work on models for ordinal data and his many contributions to latent structure analysis. Section 5 discusses Clogg's work on comparing parameters across nested regression models, work that he began during the last few years of his life; Section 6 carries forward this work. Section 7 concludes.
