摘要
The friction losses occurring in a pipeline flow of a mixture composed of broadly graded solids differ from those exhibited by a flow composed of narrowly graded solids. Laboratory experiments designed to provide information that would lead to greater understanding of the mechanisms governing the pipeline flow of broadly graded settling mixtures were carried out at the Department of Dredging Technology and Bulk Transport of the Delft University of Technology, The investigations revealed an effect of particle size distribution on the flow of sand-water mixtures. The observed effects indicated that the presence of relatively slow-settling solids (fine sand) in a fast-settling slurry (medium or coarse sand) might reduce energy dissipation caused by mechanical friction and increase energy dissipation caused by viscous friction in pipeline flows.
