摘要
Osteoporosis is characterized by decreased bone quantity and quality, leading to increased fracture risk. Despite important strides in understanding and treating this disorder, there is a large gap between knowledge and practice. In this first section of a 3-part review, the impact, pathophysiology, and diagnosis of osteoporosis are discussed. In addition, the role of the physiatrist is highlighted in closing the gap between science and clinical performance.
