Comparison and Analysis of Current Situations of Participation in Traditional Sports Activities by Uygur and Kyergyz in Xinjiang

With questionnaire investigation and interview investigation, comparison and analysis of current situations of participation in traditional ethnic sports activities by Uygur residents ( Uygur for short) and Kyergyz residents (Kyergyz for short) in Xinjiang were made. The results show that: they are very different from but much the same as each other in participating in traditional ethnic sports activities. Nearly half of the residents participate in the sports activities by 1-3 times per year; "Their Ethnic Festivals", "Jubilant Day of Relatives and Friends" and "Government-organized Activities" are main opportunities for them to participate in the traditional sports activities, and the activities' commercial level is very low; Sheep Snatching on Horseback, Horse Racing and Ethnic Wrestle are the traditional sport events preferred to by the two ethnic groups; shortage of sports field is the main reason influencing and restraining the residents' participation in the sports activities. Changing living idea and living environment and popularization of modem refreshment and entertainment mode and competitive sport events have made great influence and impact on carry-on and development of traditional ethnic sports activities.
