The effect of Cr and Y implantation on the oxidation behaviour of PM Ni3Al

The effect of Cr- and Y-implantation on the isothermal and cyclic oxidation behaviour of a boron-doped Ni3Al intermetallic alloy (obtained through a powder metallurgical route) at 585 and 900 degrees C for up to 200 h is discussed. Under both conditions Y-implantation of Ni3Al caused slightly higher oxidation rates. Evenmore, the oxide scale formed on the yttrium containing material was prone to spallation during cyclic oxidation tests at 900 degrees C in air. Cr-implantation, however, decreased the oxidation rate without any susceptibility for scale spallation; probably due to the formation of a continuous healing alumina layer, induced by the presence of chromium.
