This paper analyzes the introduction of new equipment in an existing multipurpose batch plant for which new production targets and selling profits have been specified. New equipment need to be added to the batch plant in the form of a retrofit in order to become a more economical and optimal design. The retrofit problem is formulated as a mixed-integer nonlinear program (MINLP). The proposed model is illustrated with one test examples regarding its effectiveness. Proposed strategies to solve the retrofit problem are also presented.
