Convergence clubs and relative economic performance in Great Britain: 1977-1991

Movements in the gross domestic product (GDP) per capita of English and Welsh counties and Scottish regions are examined to test whether the counties and regions are converging in terms of GDP per capita. The exercise is carried out for the period 1977 to 1991 and for six sub-periods. Although there is no evidence of convergence over the whole period there is some evidence of convergence within certain sub-periods. These are periods when the economy as a whole is growing slowly.
