This paper addresses some of the recent advances in Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar at millimetre wave frequencies. It describes a coherent radar architecture incorporating Direct Digital Synthesis (DDS) and, in particular, the choice of Stable Local Oscillator (STALO). Consideration is given to phase noise, sweep linearity and the benefits of coherency. Examples of radar performance, including the measurement of sub-micron displacements are given and some example applications are described.
