Microstructure and age hardening response of cast Al-Mg-Sc-Zr alloys

摘要
The age hardening response and microstructure of cast Al-Mg-Sc-Zr alloys were investigated. The microstructure of the sample of the study were studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was observed that Mg induced hardness was purely additive and independent of the transformations related to Sc and Zr. It was also observed that the binary alloy (0Mg) softened after aging beyond 300°C, while the Zr containing alloys did not soften significantly after aging at 400°C. Results show that the age hardening is due to fine Al3(Sc1-xZrx) preciptates and the increased hardness of Mg containing alloys is due to solid solution hardening.
