Lifetime characteristics of nanocomposite enameled wire under surge voltage application

V-N properties show longer times to breakdown for nanocomposite enameled wires and the PD resistance increases with increasing nanofiller concentration as showed in a recent experimental setup. In the experiment, PD inception, propagation and breakdown (BD) characteristics of nanocomposite and conventional enameled wires under surge voltage application were investigated. An inverter surge-generation circuit consisting of direct current high voltage has been utilized along with supply, high-voltage semiconductor switch, pulse generator and coaxial cable. Meanwhile, the partial discharge (PD) properties from PD inception to breakdown (BD) were measured using twisted pair samples under repetitive surge-voltage application. It was showed that V-N characteristics exhibited longer times to breakdown for nanocomposite enameled wires and the PD resistance increased with the increasing nanofiller concentration. In addition, the remaining enamel thickness, in the case of conventional enameled wires, decreased linearly with the time of voltage application.
