The present study was designed to investigate the effects of an intensive, behaviorally oriented treatment program for 6- to 8-year-old children who stutter. Both the short-term and long-term effectiveness of the treatment were evaluated. A range of measures including percentage of syllables stuttered, speech naturalness, and subjective stuttering severity indicated that the program was successful in treating a group of 15 children who stuttered. Further, this improvement in fluency was maintained for an 18-month period after treatment ceased. Issues relating to the evaluation of outcome are discussed. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Inc.
