摘要
The complete reorganization of demonstrative system is a central and well known example of morphosyntactic specialization which characterizes the history of French. This article summarizes the main stages of this evolution, which lasted about six centuries and is now fairly well described. The main contribution of the paper is based on the relatively broad perspective in which morphosyntactic evolution is replaced, the evolution being addressed as part of a large scale diachrony (from classical Latin to modern French through medieval French), in a Romance perspective (focusing on the factors that distinguish French from other Romance languages) and through its relations with semantic changes parallel to morphosyntactic specialization.
