Effects of Ficus exasperata (Vahl) aqueous leaves (FEAL) extract on alcohol-induced lipid profile, ATPases, and electrolytes perturbations in male Wistar rats

Objective: Uncontrolled alcohol metabolism negatively affects lipid metabolism, leading to ATPases and electrolyte imbalances that exacerbate several diseases or disorders. This study compared Ficus exasperata aqueous leaves (FEAL) extract efficacy on levels of lipid profile, plasma membrane H+/K+, Na+/K+, and Ca2+/Mg2+ ATPases, and electrolytes with that of alcohol -induced perturbations in male Wistar rats. Materials and methods: The 12 groups (A - L) included 6 male Wistar rats each. For 42 days, groups A and C received 0% and 40% alcohol (3.2 g x kg-1 body weight). Group B received 40% alcohol for 28 days, followed by 0% alcohol for 14 days. After 28 days with 0% alcohol administrations, groups D, E, and F received varied FEAL extract dosages (125, 250, and 500 mg/kg body weight) for 14 days. Following 28 days of 40% alcohol administration, groups G, H, and I received varied FEAL extract dosages, while groups J, K, and L were co -administered with varied FEAL extract dosages and 40% alcohol for 14 days. Results: Administration of FEAL extract mitigated alcohol -induced inconsistent body weight increases and high serum free fatty acids, triacylglycerols, cholesterols, and phospholipids. FEAL extract revealed restorative effects on levels of lipid profiles, ATPases, and electrolyte homeostasis alterations provoked by excessive alcohol consumption. Conclusion: This study further revealed FEAL extract efficacies in managing or treating diseases or disorders associated with lipid profiles, ATPases, and electrolyte perturbations.
