Students' perception of incorporating an electronic medical record in simulation

Background: Utilizing an electronic medical record (EMR) is a necessary competency that nursing students must possess. However, schools of nursing underutilize EMR in nursing curricula due to financial barriers of purchasing a system. Purpose: This quality improvement project aimed to collaborate with a medical center to create a fully functioning playground version of EMR at no cost to the students and evaluate student perception on the use of EMR during simulation education. Method: Faculty were trained on how to use the EMR system for simulation. Undergraduate nursing students (n=105) were surveyed at the end of the semester regarding their perception of the EMR experience and barriers faced. Results: Students were in favor of using an EMR in simulation to improve patient safety, enhance realism of the experience, and it was relatable to clinical practice.
