Using 'Real-World' Robotics Competitions to Support Digital Technology Implementation: Impacts of Professional Development

摘要
This paper reports findings from a study where regional, rural, and remote (RRR) educators were involved in a Queensland Government-funded 3-year Central Queensland (CQ) STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) Cluster Project designed to enhance student learning opportunities. This project provided STEM professional development, with a focus on robotics, helping teachers prepare students for a new regional robotics competition via informal school clubs. It was designed to empower RRR teachers to implement engaging, real-world STEM practices in their schools and focused on how aspects of the Australian Digital Technologies Curriculum (DTC) learning area connected with student robotics learning. Data were collected using survey responses from teachers participating in the professional development (PD). Attending PD significantly improved teacher confidence in supporting student robotics clubs. The project provides some evidence that access to physical resources (robotics kits), effective PD design (hands-on and differentiated learning), and partnerships (industry involvement) are all important for creating sustainable STEM education ecosystems within regional areas. Dans cet article, on presente les resultats d'une etude dans laquelle des educateurs regionaux, ruraux et isoles (RRI) ont participe a un projet par grappes concentre sur les STIM (sciences, technologies, ingenierie et mathematiques) d'une duree de trois ans, finance par le gouvernement du Queensland central (QC) et concu pour ameliorer les possibilites d'apprentissage des eleves. Ce projet a facilite le deroulement d'une formation dans le domaine des STIM, en mettant l'accent sur la robotique et en aidant les enseignants a preparer les eleves a participer a un nouveau concours regional de robotique par l'intermediaire de clubs scolaires informels. On a concu le tout afin de permettre aux enseignants RRI de mettre en oe uvre des pratiques STIM engageantes et concretes dans leurs ecoles et on s'est concentre sur la maniere dont certains aspects du domaine d'apprentissage du programme d'etudes sur les technologies numeriques (PTN) australien etaient lies a l'apprentissage de la robotique par les eleves. On a recueilli les donnees a l'aide de sondages menes aupres des enseignants participant a la formation professionnelle (FP). La participation a la FP a augmente de maniere significative la confiance des enseignants dans leur effort de soutien apporte aux clubs de robotique des eleves. Le projet semble montrer que l'acces aux ressources physiques (trousses de robotique), une conception reussie de la formation professionnelle (un apprentissage pratique et differencie) et les partenariats (une participation de l'industrie) sont tous importants pour creer des ecosystemes durables d'education des STIM dans les regions.
