Purpose: discuss and understand the disputes around water between the actors affected by the PISF, the largest hydro project that is being finalized in the Brazilian Northeast.Method/approach: was realized an ethnographic research with a qualitative approach was carried out, using as the main data collection techniques oral history interviews, participant observations, recorded in a field diary, document collection, in addition to photographic records and videos of the community with prior authorization from the people. After the field work, the data were systematized and transcribed using the NVivo & REG; software. The analysis and interpretation of data, in turn, took place through interpretive analysis anchored in the adopted theoretical framework.Main findings: the main results of the research point to several conflicting situations of access to water for the actors affected by the water project and reterritorialized in the rural village Negreiros, Salgueiro/PE. In view of this, the goals of SDG 6 of providing equitable access to this good become increasingly distant.Theoretical, practical/social contributions: the main contributions of the research were to bring to the heart of the debate the environmental problems and conflicting situations of access to water for the actors affected by the PISF, which is the largest water project in Brazil and, controversially, does not fulfill its role of distributing water to those who suffered directly from its implantation. In addition, it contributes to the critical debate of the sustainable development goal 6.Originality/relevance: the research was carried out at an opportune moment for the completion of the PISF, which points to its originality and given the importance of the PISF for the Northeast region and the complexity of its developments for the region, we highlight the relevance of this research.
