Ruralities and mental health: literature review

Brazilian rural populations are historically marked by social inequalities expressed by multidimensional poverty that generates mental suffering. This study aimed to carry out an integrative review of the literature on mental health in rural contexts. The literature was reviewed in the SciELO and PEPSIC databases, according to the PRISMA methodology. 45 articles were selected, of which 14 were included in a qualitative synthesis. The results indicate a set of factors that reveal psychosocial vulnerabilities, linked to expressions of poverty, cases of common mental disorders and risk patterns of alcohol consumption. Poverty has implications for personal well-being, feelings of community, humiliation and shame. Group interventions were potential strategies for promoting mental health. The research made it possible to know the literature on mental health in rural areas and gather recommendations that can contribute to public policies, practice and scientific production.
