What can we know about the Norwegian Holocaust? An analysis of the &DLANGBRAC;Michelet-debate&drangbrac;

Marte Michelet's book, What did the resistance movement know? (2018), has triggered an extensive and irreconcilable debate and resulted in five books that discuss issues of importance for the understanding of the Norwegian Holocaust: What role did the resistance movement play in the efforts to rescue the Jews, and could more have been done? At the same time, fundamental methodological issues are raised; how can - and should - historical sources be interpre-ted and events understood? And when does moral commitment overshadow analytical clarity? Beginning with these books, the article identifies key issues in Norwegian and comparative Holocaust research and discusses how different source-critical considerations and interpretive contexts, normative positions and narrative approaches characterize the explanations that are presented. The aim of the article is to assess the basis for the disagreements and clarify what we can know about the Norwegian Holocaust in the wake of the & DLANGBRAC;Michelet debate & drangbrac;.
