Adolescent girl with polycystic ovarian syndrome?

This article reports the case of an adolescent girl with increasing hirsutism. Under the suspicion of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) with clear biochemical signs of hyperandrogenemia, the 16-year-old girl was treated with an oral contraceptive but with no improvement of the symptoms. In girls showing hirsutism or other signs of hyperandrogenism not only PCOS but also rare causes, such as adrenocortical and ovarian tumors and enzyme defects, such as late onset adrenogenital syndrome (AGS) must be ruled out. In the present case a hormone-producing adrenocortical adenoma was found that was completely resected. This led to a clear reduction of hirsutism and a normalization of the serum androgen level.
