摘要
The teniasis-cysticercosis complex (CTC) comprises two distinct diseases, which present completely different symptoms and epidemiology, in which the human being plays an important role as the sole definitive host of the causative agent. The objective of the work was to compile bibliographic information on the cysticercosis teniasis complex, emphasizing its importance for both livestock and public health. CTC is caused by the same cestode species, at different stages in its life cycle. Teniasis, caused by the adult helminth, is established in the definitive host, whereas cysticercosis can affect the pig, which develops the Taenia solium larva, and the bovine, which develops the Taenia saginata larva. Accidentally, man can act as an intermediate host (T. solium), developing cysticercosis in his tissues, with neurocysticercosis being the most severe form. Despite the importance of teniasis and cysticercosis for public health, animal health and the economy, the epidemiological reality of the occurrence of these zoonoses in Brazil is still poorly studied in some regions. Among the main strategies to interrupt the life cycle of the parasite, a continuous work of health education with the population stands out.
