Suicidality in chronic pain: assessment and management

Suicide is a serious global public health issue. It accounted for 1.3% of all deaths in 2019, which is higher than deaths from malaria, HIV/AIDS, breast cancer, or war and homicide.1 It has been estimated that for every one adult who has died by sui-cide, there are >20 individuals who may have attempted sui-cide. The risk of death from suicide in individuals with chronic pain is at least twice that of individuals without chronic pain.2 Despite the high risk, there is little formal training in the assessment and management of the risk of suicide. The article describes the epidemiology, risk factors and protective factors for suicidality. It also provides a practical guide to help assess and manage this risk.
