Force-Sensing Intelligent Vise for Cutting Dynamics Monitoring in Machining

摘要
This work demonstrates the use of a 3-axis piezoelectric force sensor embedded vise for generating cutting force data during machining. In particular, a unique geometrical design is employed to house the bulk piezoelectric material (PZT) within the vise structure, which helps to prevent the clamping and cutting forces from adding up and potentially damaging the PZT sensors. The resulting vise sensor has a dynamic range of cutting force of up to 800 N, which is necessary for rough machining of most common materials such as medium-carbon steel. The cutting force sensing vise is also used to demonstrate the capability of measuring the dynamic cutting force during cutting process, from which the data are used to identify the occurrence of chatter. The vise with built-in sensors offers a practical solution for real manufacturing scenarios and various applications, such as cutting force and chatter monitoring.
