Role of SnO2 on the structural, optical, thermal conductivity, and electrical characteristics of multicomponent borate glasses

摘要
The synthesis of zinc borate glass matrix of composition 10Na2O-20ZnO-10SiO2-(60-x) B2O3-xSnO2 mol% (x = 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5) has been carried out by the melt-quenching method. The effects of SnO2/B2O3 replacements on the structural, optical, thermal conductivity and electrical characteristic of synthesized glasses were investigated. Their amorphous nature has been shown by XRD profiles. The produced glasses exhibited densities ranging from 2.822 to 2.634 g/cm3 and molar volumes ranging from 24.890 to 27.133 cm3/mol. The glass structure became more rigid as the SnO2/B2O3 replacements increased, according to FTIR measurements. UV-visible absorption spectra showed a blue shift with an increase in both direct and indirect optical band gap energy. With an increase in SnO2 content, the refractive index values (n) decreased. Numerous optical characteristics, including cationic polarizability, molar refraction, reflection loss and optical basicity were determined and examined in relation to structural changes. The metallization criterion exhibits insulating behavior. The conductivity measurements revealed that all investigated glass compositions are insulators. The low value of thermal conductivity of the glass doped with 0.5 mol% SnO2 (0.2 w/mk) revealed that this composition can be considered a thermal insulator and is promising for many thermoelectric applications such as thermal barrier coatings, gas turbines, and green houses.
