What gives musical instruments their sound?

摘要
If different musical instruments produce a sound of the same frequency and amplitude, we can easily distinguish the instruments from each other and with little prior experience even name them correctly (Fig. 1). This is possible because each musical instrument has its own characteristic sound, which is called timbre. But what gives musical instruments their individual sound? Since the most common explanation is incomplete, this article would like to give an answer to this question.
