摘要
Background: Ionizing radiation can cause chromosomal aberrations and micronuclei (MN) formation in the cell cytoplasm, and a research study was conducted to assess the genotoxic effects of panoramic radiation. Methods: Cytological smears were prepared from the buccal mucosa of 60 patients between the age group of 10-40 years before and 10 days after exposure to panoramic radiation and were stained with Giemsa. The sections were studied for the frequency of MN before and after exposure to radiation. Results: There was a statistically significant increase in the cells containing MN (MCF) and total MN count after exposure to the radiation in comparison to before exposure. There was no correlation of MN and MCF with age and gender. Conclusion: This data suggests that there is a need to use panoramic radiographs cautiously, only when it is highly necessary.
