Effects of strain rate on spall damage and deformation mechanisms of Mg-3Al-1Zn alloy under Taylor wave loading

摘要
Effects of strain rate on spall damage and deformation mechanisms of a textured Mg-3Al-1Zn alloy is investigated under Taylor-wave loading via gas gun plate impact or laser ablation within a wide strain rate range (approximately 10(4) - 10(7) s(-1)). The relation between spall strength and tensile strain rates can be described with a power law over this wide strain rate range. At similar peak free surface velocities, more {10 (1) over bar 12} extension twins are activated during unloading/tension for the laser-driven samples because of the higher resolved shear stress and strain rate induced by laser ablation.
