摘要
This article aims to discuss, from a historical perspective, the genesis of the notion of housing as a "social problem" in Brazil, based on an analysis of the phenomena and processes that led to the issue of housing being debated and addressed by urban workers in different professional categories from the second half of the 19th century until 1930. With a focus on the mobilizations of these social agents, the critical review, built on a broad theoretical foundation, provides reflections that are structured under the logic of highlighting the collective power of the working class as a mobilizing factor against exploitative practices. This collective power is based on the articulation of a historical subject that, in the early 20th century, mobilized for fairer housing conditions. The field of labor has revealed a historical problem that persists in the country to this day.
