- [7] We grow spruce trees for the nursery market on land at the edge of the mountains. In the spring, a tremendous amount of runoff goes through our land. I am interested in knowing exactly what compost does for erosion. I know that it adds humus to the soil and improves the soil structure, but will it compensate for all of the soil we have removed after digging out the trees and releveling the ground? Our compost is made mostly from sawdust with some cattle manure and urea fertilizer added. BIOCYCLE, 1999, 40 (07) : 18 - 19
