摘要
Staphylococcus epidermidis is a common commensal organism of the human skin and mucosa. Nowadays, numerous endemic multidrug-resistant S. epidermidis strains predominate across healthcare sys-tems around the world. The antibiotic resistance pattern and patient demographics data are important factors in selecting the appropriate antibiotics. This retrospective study was carried out to describe the age-based antibiotic susceptibility patterns of S. epidermidis in a tertiary hospital in Saudi Arabia. The study included a review of the bacteria susceptibility data from January 2021 to December 2021. One hundred forty-nine S, epidermidis isolates were collected in the hospital in 2021. The present study showed that the resistance of S. epidermidis isolates was high to clindamycin, ampicillin, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, and penicillin. The present study showed that the resistance rates of S. epidermidis to antibiotics were different in various age groups. It is important to take age into consideration before treating S. epidermidis infections and it is important to make and distribute age-specific antibiograms for use by prescribers.
