摘要：

Herpes simplex and herpes zoster infections are incredibly common. Because of the neurotropic nature of these viruses, infection is lifelong. Recognition of early signs of infection is necessary to implement effective treatment and prevent complications. Various laboratory tests exist to confirm infection; however, outcomes depend on the stage of the lesion and proper collection technique. Immunosuppressed populations require special attention, as herpes infections may appear atypical and severe.This group is at higher risk for disseminated disease. Immunocompetent adults older than 60 should get vaccinated for VZV, as neurologic sequelae can be serious.
