The article analyzes the role of the newspaper Severnaya Pochta and its editor-in-chief I. A. Goncharov in the 1863 campaign for the return of the Russian aristocrats to their homeland. Newly revealed circumstances reshape the established opinion concerning this period of the writer's biography. The attribution of an unknown text by Goncharov in the newspaper is suggested.
