Effect of Ca addition on microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg-3.8Al-1.1Sn alloys

摘要
Achieving high strength and high ductility simultaneously is challenging, limiting the industrial application of Mg alloys. However, effective approaches such as grain refinement and texture weakening have emerged to address this challenge. Herein, we design a novel processing strategy incorporating the addition of Ca to Mg-AlSn alloys and asymmetric severe shear extrusion (ASSE). This strategy aims to refine the grain structure and promote the formation of dispersed nano -sized CaMgSn phases. The extruded Mg-3.8Al-1.1Sn-0.4Ca sheets exhibit a yield strength (YS) of -220 MPa, an ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of -320 MPa, and an elongation (EL) of -18.0%, which achieving a good combination of strength and ductility through a single -pass extrusion.
