Chinese patent medicines for childhood diseases of the respiratory and digestive systems: A scoping review protocol

Introduction: In China, the clinical use of Chinese patent medicines (CPMs) for children with respiratory and/or digestive diseases (RDDs) is increasing, and there are many clinical studies on CPMs. However, little is known about the overall impact of CPMs on RDDs and co-morbid RDDs. Thus, this scoping review will aim to sys-tematically identify and map available research evidence on CPMs for children with RDDs and co-morbid RDDs, explore the research gaps and drive further research. Methods: The scoping review will be conducted based on the framework proposed by Arksey and O'Malley, and reported following the standards of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). Both Chinese and international literature databases will be searched to identify eligible studies and other publicly available documents. Data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and organized in response to review questions. Findings will be presented in a visual and aggregate form as well as a descriptive format aligning with the objectives and scope of this protocol. Conclusion: A dedicated article will be drafted to reflect the profile of the use of CPMs and research stemming from this protocol. The findings of the review will extend beyond previous reviews, and attempt to provide comprehensive insight into the role of CPMs in treating children with RDDs and co-morbid RDDs.
