摘要
Type 1 diabetes is a rare new onset disease and its diagnosis is commonly delayed in both children and adults. Initially, there may be a threat to life due to ketoacidosis and intensive care treatment may be required. For treatment, the focus is on situation-appropriate substitution of insulin deficiency. Treatment and guidance for self-treatment require specific knowledge. Ongoing training and guidance are fundamental for successful therapy. Regular long-term monitoring of patients by a specialized treatment team is a part of disease management programs (DMP). Avoiding secondary diseases and improving life expectancy are among the main goals in the care of people with type 1 diabetes. If those affected succeed in implementing their therapy on a daily basis, most of them can lead a largely normal life.
