Effect of borate on the corrosion behaviors of Ni11Fe10Cu anode in molten carbonate

摘要
Borates are an excellent electrolyte modifier for molten carbonate electrolyzers, which modulate electrode re-actions. However, the addition of borate in molten carbonate causes the degradation of the Ni11Fe10Cu anode. Herein, the corrosion behaviors of Ni, Fe, Cu and Ni11Fe10Cu electrodes in molten Na2CO3-K2CO3 with/without borates were studied at different temperatures, gas atmospheres, and pre-oxidation conditions. The in situ formed acidic borate at the anode accelerates the dissolution of the oxide scale, which can be suppressed by increasing temperature or decreasing CO2 partial pressure. The corrosion resistance of the Ni11Fe10Cu anode can be further enhanced by preparing a NiFe2O4 scale through electrochemical pre-oxidation.
