Acute cholecystitis following elective colonoscopy

Acute cholecystitis is a rare complication of colonoscopy, with just 15 published cases in the literature. We report a male patient with unknown cholelithiasis who underwent an elective gastroscopy and colonoscopy for gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and undifferentiated abdominal pain. The patient's gastroscopy showed gastric polyps and gastritis. The colonoscopy showed a single diverticulum in the ascending colon and two polyps in the proximal and distal transverse colon, all of which were retrieved and marked with tattoo. The patient represented 12-hour postcolonoscopy with postprandial right upper quadrant pain, subjective fevers, nausea and vomiting. Based on the clinical presentation, pathology and radiology, it was determined that the patient required a diagnostic laparoscopy, which revealed an acute gangrenous gallbladder.
