Semantic Analysis of the Concept of Religion in Ignorance Poetry

Some words in Arabic have different meanings depending on the situation. Religion is one of them. Ignorance poems are important elements that reflect the religious, literary and cultural aspects of the period. In addition, Arabic texts are extremely rich sources in terms of grammar, vocabulary, rhetoric and fluency. The fact that it is istishad, especially with poems, in many Arabic sources is proof of this. In this study, the concept of religion mentioned in the poetry of Jahiliyya has been examined in terms of meaning. The viewpoint of the poets who lived in that period to religion and the meanings they used this word were investigated. Is the word religion in the poem used in the sense of belief and worship, or in other meanings? The lack of an original study answering his question led to the need for such a research. The aim of the research is to examine the meanings of the word religion in poetry, and to evaluate the viewpoint of those living in that period on religion in the light of poems. In the study, the poems in which the word religion is mentioned are mentioned by examining all the poems of Jahiliyya. It is thought that the research will contribute to the studies in this field to some extent. The semantic dimension of the concept of religion in the poems was examined; In the current language of the period, the semantic framework of the concept of religion was tried to be determined. Sometimes two or more examples are given from the poems in which the concept of religion is used in the same sense; Others have been cited by citing the source. Where an example is given, there are no other examples. First of all, the meanings in which the concept of religion is used were examined and then its use in poetry was evaluated. While determining the meaning of the word religion in Jahiliyya poetry, besides making use of the commentaries of the relevant couplet in which the word religion is included, it has been tried to evaluate both the couplet itself and before and after it holistically. In addition, while examining the concept of religion, not only the word religion, which is an infinitive, but also the concepts derived from it were examined. As a result, it is seen that the concept of religion in Jahiliyya poetry is used in different meanings and especially in the sense of belief, worship and morality. It is seen that the word religion was used for heavenly religions based on divine revelation in the period of ignorance. In addition to this, it has been determined that the word religion is used with opposite meanings such as honor-disgrace, obedience-rebellion. As a result, good habits were not absent in the Age of Ignorance, when ugly customs were common. Generosity, commitment to loyalty, protecting the oppressed and a sense of chastity are some of these customs.
