IMAGES AND WRITINGS IN THE CHANGES OF THE CATHOLIC COUNTER-REFORMATION IN WESTERN ART: A POSSIBLE READING

This article will attempt to discuss the transformations that Western Christian art underwent during the Catholic Counter-Reformation. The objective was to think and analyze a bibliography that highlighted this social/cultural phenomenon in the art of the modern period. To this end, a small part of Marian iconography was analyzed in order to understand these changes over time. In this sense, the images had to adapt to the new European reality, especially the paintings that represent the Virgin Mary. The methodology followed by us here was the bibliographic review, as well as, we used visual documentary sources that represented these cultural transformations in this period, therefore, iconographic sources and textual sources were used to enter this European urban social world.
