Gender-Affirming Surgery of the Mandible Lower Jaw Feminization and Masculinization

Mandibular contouring is a safe and effective way to masculinize or feminize the face for facial gender-affirming surgery. Facial feminization is largely reductive in nature, aiming to decrease the lower facial width, decrease the chin height, and soften the gonial angle. Facial masculinization is largely additive in nature, with bone grafting or alloplastic augmentation of the mandibular angles and chin. Facial feminization successfully feminizes the face, decreases misgendering, and increases mental health quality of life. Facial masculinization is less common, secondary to the profound masculinizing impact of testosterone.
