Methylammonium hydrogen succinate monohydrate (MHSM) is an organic crystal that was developed with good optical quality from a combined solution of methylamine and succinic acid by slow evaporation using a mixture of water + acetone as a solvent. Single crystal XRD analyses showed that the chemical crystallizes in a monoclinic crystal structure. The MHSM crystal is transparent throughout the entire visible range. The optical transmittance of the crystal was assessed using UV spectral analysis. The lower cutoff wavelength was found to be 230 nm with a band gap of 5.27 eV. Fourier transform infrared spectral analysis was used to ascertain the functional groups of the chemicals present in the crystal. The emission spectra of the compound indicate a green emission peak at 532 nm using photoluminescence measurements. Utilizing a 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser, the surface damage threshold reading of the generated crystal (2.46 GW/cm(2)) was evaluated. Thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis were employed to measure the thermal stability of the powdered MHSM crystal, and its endurance under heating is reported as a graph. To analyze the behavior of third-order nonlinear optical refractive index and absorption, z-scanning was set up to close and open the aperture. The magnitude [refractive index (n(2)) and absorption coefficient (beta) and susceptibility (chi(3))] of the MHSM crystal was measured and compared with a few succinate-derived crystals, and the optical limiting properties were also analyzed from the z-scan setup.
