Land and production grabbing in Uruguayan agrarian sector (1990-2011)

The objective of this paper is to analyze the processes of land and production monopolization in three agricultural sectors in Uruguay: agroforestry, cereals and dairy. The methodological proposal in this article is quantitative and focused on the analysis of data from the last three general agricultural censuses (1990, 2000 and 2011). The results show the evolution of indicators of control over production and land, presenting similarities and differences between items but at the same time allowing us to describe a general trend: the dominance of corporation and the displacement and decomposition of family production. As a result, we also highlight the evolution of the demand for labor and of the resident population linked to agricultural farms, evidencing a process of depopulation of the countryside in parallel to an increase in the productivity of agricultural labor.
