Spontaneous and complicated therapeutic abortions have a wide range of presenta-tions and management strategies. Emergency physicians must be adept in the timely diagnosis and management of these conditions. A thorough knowledge of the man-agement approaches their anticipated course may allow emergency physicians to provide more competent and compassionate care during a time of both psychological and physiological stress. Emergency physicians should take particular care to famil-iarize themselves with the management of complicated therapeutic abortion given the risk of increased rates of clandestine abortions particularly in states with no or limited access to legal abortion.
