In 2022, 33 millions Brazilians were still hungry in the country. The current reality of hunger in the world is aggravated by three factors: deficiency in food distribution; food waste; poverty and food insecurity. Worldwide, 1/3 of everything that is produced is thrown away, a fact that worries all spheres of government, since waste impacts directly the food security. One of the initiatives to combat food loss and waste (PDA) is to choose for food that is locally produced. Investing in family farming can be considered a way of increase food security, as well as the production and distribution of food to local and regional markets, helping to combat the PDA. In 2013, the Food Acquisition Program (PAA) was created in Brazil, Governmental Public Policy on Food Security that has as its basic purposes, the promotion of access to food and the encouragement of family farming. This research was developed with the central focus of investigation how the PAA contributes to reducing PDA in Brazil. To reach the objective, bibliographic and documentary research was carried out on websites, books, scientific articles, and materials from official agencies. As a result, some reflections were made about the PAA's contributions to reducing PDA, among them, the issue of public purchases from family farming that can contribute to the reduction of the PDA due to short production and commercialization circuits; the purchase of food produced outside the aesthetic standard; and, the articulation of PAA with the Food Banks.
