Trust across borders: a review of the research on interorganizational trust in international business

Trust between organizations has been recognized as crucial in international business (IB) and has attracted extensive research attention. Researchers have conceptualized and measured interorganizational trust in multiple ways, investigated numerous determinants and outcomes of interorganizational trust, and explored interorganizational trust in several types of international relationships across a range of country combinations using varied research methodologies. Our review aims to consolidate and advance this literature by focusing on (i) how interorganizational trust has been conceptualized in IB; (ii) how interorganizational trust has been operationalized in IB; (iii) what factors promote or hinder interorganizational trust in IB; (iv) what the outcomes are of interorganizational trust in IB; and (v) how interorganizational trust has been studied in IB. For each question, we analyze the literature and then provide recommendations and directions for future research. We aim to provide a solid grounding for future research that will keep this area theoretically sound, empirically robust, and phenomenologically relevant. La confiance entre les organisations a ete reconnue comme cruciale dans les affaires internationales (International Business - IB), et a fait l'objet d'une attention particuliere de la part des chercheurs. Ces derniers ont, de multiples facons, conceptualise et mesure la confiance inter-organisationnelle. Ils ont etudie de nombreux determinants et consequences de celle-ci, et l'ont exploree dans plusieurs types de relations internationales a travers un eventail de combinaisons de pays via diverses methodologies de recherche. Notre revue vise a consolider et a faire progresser cette litterature en se focalisant sur (i) la maniere dont la confiance inter-organisationnelle a ete conceptualisee dans l'IB ; (ii) la maniere dont la confiance inter-organisationnelle a ete operationnalisee dans l'IB ; (iii) les facteurs qui favorisent ou entravent la confiance inter-organisationnelle dans l'IB ; (iv) les consequences de la confiance inter-organisationnelle dans l'IB ; et (v) la maniere dont la confiance inter-organisationnelle a ete etudiee dans l'IB. Pour chaque point, nous analysons la litterature, puis formulons des recommandations et des orientations pour de futures recherches. Notre objectif est de fournir une base solide pour ces dernieres afin que ce domaine reste theoriquement solide, empiriquement robuste et phenomenologiquement pertinent. La confianza entre organizaciones ha sido reconocida de suma importancia en negocios internacionales (IB por sus iniciales en ingles) y ha atraido una extensa atencion de investigacion. Los investigadores han conceptualizado y medido la confianza interorganizacional en diferentes maneras, han investigado numerosos determinantes y resultados de la confianza interorganizacional, y han explorado la confianza interorganizacional en varios tipos de relaciones internacionales en una variedad de combinaciones de paises utilizando metodologias de investigacion variadas. Nuestra revision busca consolidar y avanzar esta literatura centrandose en (i) como se ha conceptualizado la confianza interorganizacional en negocios internacionales; (ii) como se ha operacionalizado la confianza interorganizacional en negocios internacionales; (iii) que factores promueven o dificultan la confianza interorganizacional en negocios internacionales; (iv) cuales son los resultados de la confianza interorganizacional en negocios internacionales; y (v) como se ha estudiado la confianza interorganizacional en negocios internacionales. Para cada pregunta, analizamos la bibliografia y, luego proporcionamos recomendaciones y orientaciones para futuras investigaciones. Nuestro objetivo es proporcionar una base solida para futuras investigaciones que mantengan esta area teoricamente solida, empiricamente robusta y fenomenologicamente relevante. Pesquisadores conceituaram e mediram confianca interorganizacional de varias maneiras, investigaram varios determinantes e consequencias da confianca interorganizacional e exploraram a confianca interorganizacional em varios tipos de relacoes internacionais em uma variedade de combinacoes de paises usando metodologias de pesquisa diversas. Nossa revisao visa consolidar e avancar essa literatura focando em (i) como a confianca interorganizacional foi conceituada em IB; (ii) como a confianca interorganizacional tem sido operacionalizada em IB; (iii) quais fatores promovem ou dificultam a confianca interorganizacional em IB; (iv) quais sao as consequencias da confianca interorganizacional em IB; e (v) como a confianca interorganizacional tem sido estudada em IB.
